There are many ways to market yourself as a screenwriter, but in this blog post, I will only mention what I believe to be the three best ways.
Create a blog
You can create a blog by using several different website platforms such as Tumblr, Blogger or Medium. This is where you can showcase your writing daily, weekly or monthly and could share the link to your blog posts using your social media platforms. One of the best pieces of advice I received upon completing my Creative Writing MFA was to be sure that I was writing daily. According to The Writing Cooperative, “writing daily helps you to polish up on your writing. While you will probably never reach ‘perfection’ with your writing practice will definitely help you improve your writing drastically, especially if you are writing every day.” Secondly, writing daily will also assist by being able to catch your own grammar mistakes easier. It is important to note as a screenwriter to be sure that your scripts are grammar free. Be sure to either have a second set of eyes read over your work or download Grammarly if someone else isn’t available.
Search for Screenwriting Competitions and Submit
This sounds easier said than done, but it’s possible. Every year there are plenty of screenwriting competitions to submit to. In our February 5th blog post, we list 5 of the Best Screenwriting Contests of 2019. Even if you don’t place in a screenwriting competition, it is one of the best ways to get constructive criticism from industry professionals, so the next time you submit a screenplay you will learn from your mistakes and in the end, possibly win the contest!
Create a Short Film
You’ve written, wrote multiple rewrites, edited and re-edited AND had someone
proofread over your work, now what? Create a short film, of course! Post a casting call on social media platforms and find a location to shoot what you’ve created and film it! Once you’ve finished filming, you can always submit your short film to film festivals or create your own viewing party. Creating your own short film is a great platform for screenwriter because you will be able to showcase what you’ve created.
